General discription
Is someone who makes or repairs lutes and other string instruments. In the United States, the term is used interchangeably with any term that refers to a specific, or specialty type of stringed intrument, such as violin maker, guitar maker, lute maker, etc. The word luthier comes from the French word luth, which means "lute". The craft of making string instruments, or lutherie, is commonly divided into two main categories: makers of stringed instruments that are plucked or strummed and makers of stringed instruments that are bowed Since bowed instruments require a bow, the second category includes a subtype known as a bow maker or archetier.

Training and Education
ASL is the original and longest established school for luthiers
in North America. Since 1973 many hundreds of beginning and experienced craftspeople have passed through our doors, learning valuable skills and gaining powerful insights into this challenging work.

If you go to a one year luthiers program you can be working with Gibson guitars, Repairing over 70 guitars a day.
You can open your own guitar shop for open repairs.

Salary and Benefits
Depending on if you make or fix custom guitars. If the repair that is made is good, then it will get paid better then someones who wasn't a guitar tech COULD make up to 100 grand yearly depending on the quality of there guitar repairs... a custom guitar repair has to be good.. they repair one of a kind guitars and they could make up to 300 grand for just regular one of a kind guitars or even up to a million for fixing real celebrities guitars.
