What is graphic design ?

crystal kennedy

Graphic design combines the creativity and formal characteristics of fine art with the audience-centered approach of marketing to create effective visual communication. Unlike fine art, it is always in the service of the client’s needs.

Much more than simply “making things look pretty,” graphic design uses color, type, and composition to communicate with the chosen audience.

To do this, designers analyze data about the intended audience, such as the audience’s class, gender, education, buying habits, personality traits, favorite magazines and television shows, and so on.

Designers take that demographic and psychographic information and look at what that audience sees. For instance, if the intended audience loves Martha Stewart, designers look at Martha Stewart magazines, ads, and products to analyze their visual vocabulary (color, theme, shape, typeface, composition). Using those fundamental elements, designers create new pieces which connectand communicate with the intended audience.

What education and training is required to become a graphic designer?

A bachelor's degree is for most entry-level and advanced graphic design positions; although some entry-level technical positions may only require an associate degree. Bachelor's degree programs in fine arts or graphic design are offered at many colleges, universities, and private design schools. Most curriculums include: art, principles of design, computerized design, commercial graphics production, printing techniques, and Web site design. In addition to design courses, a liberal arts education that includes courses in art history, writing, psychology, sociology, foreign languages and cultural studies, marketing, and business are useful in helping designers work

Any art course work is a must. Drawing, sketching, painting - whatever it's called at a particular school. Even some sculpting or ceramics may help. Some work in advertising might help. Advertisers are big consumers of graphic art. Who else buys it? Find out and plug in. Who hires graphic designers? Why? You need to know, so start digging. In math, some algebra. And geometry and trigonometry are a must. It's the latter math courses that will bring some "muscle" to creative efforts in graphic design. Lines, forms and shapes have roots in mathematics. Anyone who tells you differently is not relating factual information.
