  • Chartered Accountantsalso known as CAs are very versatile accountants. They spend years acquiring knowledge on many different aspects of the accounting industry such as accounting, business, and financial management.
  • CAs therefore can receive jobs from many different areas in the working field such as public practice, business, government and the non-profit sector.

  • Since CAs are very versatile they can be responsible for many different things such as: financial statements for companies, advise clients in areas such as tax planning, personal financial planning, etc.
  • Technology is now becoming a bigger part of accounting,it isn’t just paper and calculators anymore .Technology has allowed for many advances in the practice of accounting in recent years.
  • The main technology used is simply the computer with software downloaded to help organize spreadsheets and very important data.
  • Also accountants have to be very secure with their work so that they can keep it somewhat confidential so they have to use externalpermanent storage devices such as CDs, DVDs and zip discs.


Training and Education

  • The standards for becoming a chartered accountant are set by the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants .
  • In order to become a certified CA you are required to go to a university and complete a bachelor’s degree in any area and have a period of work experience an completion of a CA training program.
  • Finally, students must pass the Uniform Evaluation (UFE) which is a 3-day exam written once a year by all CA candidates across Canada.

Salary and benefits

  • It primarily depends on experience, location and industry.
  • CAs employed by large accounting firms in major cities generally earn more than those employed by smaller firms.
  • For university graduates, salaries can range between $35,000 and $50,000 a year. Newly qualified CAs may earn from $50,000 to $80,000 a year.
  • CAs with 3 to 5 years of experience can earn $100,000 or more a year.
  • There is always ways to increase and bump up your income by just earning more and more experience.


Working conditions and Realities

  • Chartered accountants’ working hours vary depending on the time of year. From fall to early spring, they are very busy. Sometimes they have to work 50 to 60 hours a week.
  • Weekend work is normal during this time of year. In the late spring and summer, the pace of work slows,usually around 40 hours a week.
  • Those just starting out in the profession usually receive 2 to 3 weeks of vacation a year. With seniority, the number of weeks of vacation often increases to 4. CAs work in office environments.
  • Chartered accountants also get the privilege of traveling even though it is an in-door job usually spent at a desk or in a firm, within daytime hours.
